Ngorongoro Crater and the Crater Highlands

Experience the wonders of Ngorongoro, the unofficial 8th Wonder of the World, a World Heritage Site and a unique multiple land-use area.  Without doubt, Ngorongoro is  one of the world’s truly amazing places.

Picture the spectacular volcanic scenery of the largest unbroken, crater on the planet. Imagine a place with an incredible concentration of wildlife, amongst which Maasai herdsmen and their cattle wander at will.  Wonder where you will find the shiifting sands tomorrow.

Enter into the crater itself (actually the caldera of a collapsed volcano), where the elusive leopard hunts, large prides of lion congregate and huge clans of spotted hyaena roam.  Thousands of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle live and die here around the central soda lake, on the grasslands and in the swamps.

Spot elephant and buffalo, rhino and baboon as they take advantage of the shade in the Lerai and Ngoitokitok fever tree forests.  Lake Magadi provides a feeding ground for thousands of Greater and Lesser Flamingo as well as pelican, cormorant, Egyptian geese and many other shore birds.

Marvel at the exuberant crater birdlife; kori bustards, secretary birds and crowned cranes glide in their elegant, long-legged fashion across the grasslands. Look up to see the huge Lammergeyer, the distinctive Bateleur eagle and great Lappet-faced vultures which circle tirelessly overhead.

Trek into Empakaai and Olmoti Crater, walk with a Maasai guide through their cattle herds and view their scattered, sometimes temporary, homesteads. The dense rainforest which cover most of the Ngorongoro Highlands is an excellent area for hiking.

Enjoy the comfort of your nights at Ngorongoro with AFRICAT, in Lodges on the Crater rim or in our strategically placed camps.  For following the great migration, we use mobile camps, which enable us to stay very close to the herds.
