MOUNT KILIMANJARO – A classic
image of Africa (or Africa’s
Everest) Rising abruptly from the
African plains and reaching an
altitude of 5,895 m, this dormant
but not extinct volcano is the
highest free-standing mountain in
the world. It can be climbed by
various routes over a period of
between five to ten days.
The various trails (Marangu, Machame,
Mweka, Shira, Lemosho, Rongai and
Umbwe) pass through lush, tropical
rainforests to heather and trees;
from valley and open moorland to a
lunar landscape of alpine desert,
finally reaching the arctic
environment of the summit.
MOUNT MERU – Africa’s 5th
highest mountain
Mount Meru, another volcanic peak,
is situated within Arusha National
Park and can be climbed in 3 days,
though 4 are recommended to break up
the steep descent and allow for time
to explore the crater and to
appreciate the beautiful flora &
fauna en route.
OLDONYO LENGAI – The
Maasai Mountain of God
This still-active volcano in the
Great Rift Valley is one of the
youngest and possibly most active
volcanoes in East Africa. To trek
Lengai takes one day only; the
ascent takes approximately 5-6 hours
and the descent about two hours.
MOUNT HANANG, THE UDZUNGWA &
USAMBARA MOUNTAINS -
Lesser-known hiking & trekking
treats
Mount Hanang is Africa’s 9th highest
mountain and has numerous hiking
trails. Trekking in the Udzungwa
Mountains (now a National Park) in
south-central Tanzania is a
nature-lover’s dream, and walking in
the Usambara Mountains rates second
to none for naturalists and
botanists alike.
