Ruaha National Park
Safari Highlights:
Fly into Ruaha, Tanzania’s biggest
park and start game viewing as soon
as your plane touches down. Spot
your first giraffe as it paces
beside the airstrip; observe the
line of zebra which crosses the
runway; look a little further, just
past that bulging baobab tree, at a
group of female elephants, gathered
protectively around their young.
See how many of Ruaha’s diverse
antelope species you can name,
starting with the park emblem - a
greater kudu male, crowned with
large, corkscrew horns.
Keep an eye out for a lion pride on
the acacia savannah, a stalking
cheetah on the open grassland and a
lurking leopard in the tangled
riverine thickets of miombo
woodland.
Follow the course of the Great Ruaha
River with its large population of
hippo and crocodile and watch out
for both striped and spotted hyena
which, together with packs of
African wild dog (the painted
wolves), come regularly to drink at
the river.
Encounter unique wildlife in Ruaha
National Park, where game drives and walking safaris are best undertaken in the dry
season (June-December) whilst for
birdwatchers and those who
appreciate lush scenery and
wildflowers, the wet season is
excellent (January to May). 450 bird
species have been recorded in this
park.
Relax
in the riverside lodge or a seasonal
tented camp. Self-catering bandas
and two campsites are also
available.
